Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced that the process of issuing new ration cards has resumed on a large scale from May 15, ending a wait of nearly 13 years.Addressing a press conference, Gupta said the government had cancelled around 7.72 lakh “invalid” ration cards, and invited fresh online applications.

The Delhi government has announced major changes related to ration cards for needy families in the capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has said the government was planning to increase the annual income limit for getting a ration card from ₹1.25 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh.Ration cards are required to avail benefits of government schemes such as the free ration scheme and Ayushman cards.
The Chief Minister said the move aims to help more needy families access these schemes. The proposal to increase the income limit will be approved in the next Cabinet meeting.After an intensive audit, the government removed 1.44 lakh beneficiaries not fulfilling the income criterion, 35,800 who did not receive ration, 29,580 who died, while 23,394 ration cards were found to be duplicates,” she said.
“Delhi Government is implementing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Antyodaya vision to ensure that welfare benefits reach those who genuinely need them the most,” she further noted.
7.72 lakh new ration cards to be issued
The Delhi government has started the process to issue 7.72 lakh new ration cards.
No new ration cards had been issued in Delhi since 2013. The government has now implemented the 2026 rules and reopened the application process.
The Chief Minister said that 3,72,542 applications had remained pending for the last 13 years. These old applications will now be cancelled and fresh applications will be invited.
Several ration cards cancelled
The government also carried out an audit and removed several beneficiaries from the ration list.
According to the Chief Minister:
1.44 lakh beneficiaries were removed for not meeting the income criteria
35,800 people were removed for not collecting ration
29,580 beneficiaries had died
23,394 ration cards were found to be duplicates.
Entire Process Goes Online
The Chief Minister said people will no longer have to visit government offices repeatedly to get a ration card made. The entire process, including applications and related services, has now been made fully online.
The government is also installing e-weighing machines at ration shops instead of traditional weighing machines. Biometric authentication has also been made mandatory.
What is the income eligibility limit for ration cards, now?
At present, families with an annual income of up to ₹1.25 lakh can apply for a ration card in Delhi. But the government is considering increasing this limit to ₹2.5 lakh soon.
Chief Minister said the annual family income eligibility limit for ration cards has already been increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.20 lakh under the Delhi Food Security Rules, 2026, with the objective of bringing more poor and middle-class families under the welfare net.

How to Apply Ration card in Delhi online
Step 1:Visit the official website of the Department of Food, Supplies and Consumer Affairs, GNCT of Delhi at https://nfs.delhigovt.nic.in/Home.aspx
Step 2:Go to the ‘Citizen’s Corner’ and scroll down to the list of options displayed.
Step 3:Next, select the ‘Apply online for Food Security’ option.
Step 4:You will be redirected to an e-District portal.
Step 5:Next, you will need to register as a user by entering the prompted details. If you are already registered, enter your login details.
Step 6:If you are registering as a new user, a registration form will open on your screen after you click on the ‘Register’ button.
Step 7:Enter the prompted details and complete the registration process.
Step 8:Now, select the ‘New Ration Card Registration Form’ option.
Step 9:A registration form for a new ration card will appear on your screen; fill in all the required details.
Step 10:Next, click on the ‘Upload Documents’ option and upload scanned copies of all required supporting documents.
Step 11:Once all documents are uploaded, click on the ‘Submit’ button.
