Nearly four decades after India and Sri Lanka stopped a passenger ferry service, a high-speed ship will once again connect the two neighbouring countries. On Saturday, Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, inaugurated Cheriyapani, which will link Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu with Kankesanthurai in the northern province of Sri Lanka.

Cheriyapani departed Nagapattinam port towards Kankesanthurai with 50 passengers and 12 crew members under Captain Biju George. The ferry is expected to take three hours to complete its journey. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude after the passenger ferry service was resumed. In a video address, he said, “We are embarking on a new chapter in the diplomatic and economic relations between India and Sri Lanka. The launch of a ferry service between Nagapattinam and Kankesanturai is an important milestone in strengthening our relations.”

The officials from the Nagapattinam Shipping Harbour Department have introduced a special fare of Rs 2,800, including Rs 2,375 and 18 per cent tax, as a one-day promotional offer for October 14. This is a substantial 75 per cent discount from the regular ticket price of Rs 7,670 per head, inclusive of Rs 6,500 base fare and an 18 per cent GST. At least 30 travellers had booked their tickets at the discounted rate for this journey.

The much-awaited resumption of high-speed passenger ferry service between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and Kankesanthurai in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka will begin on October 10 after a gap of nearly four decades.

The High-Speed Craft-Cheriyapani, owned by the Shipping Corporation of India, has been deployed. The ferry could carry 150 persons and the ticket is priced at Rs 6,500 & 7,670 per person and will take three hours to reach Northern Province, Jaffna on the neighbouring island.

Sri Lankan Gangesan Port is located at a distance of 60 nautical miles from Nagai Port and can be reached by boat in 3.30 hours, the authorities said and they added that As 6,000 liters of fuel is required to travel from Nagapattinam to Sri Lanka, the passenger fare is fixed at Rs 6,500 including 18 percent GST and the passenger can carry 40 kg of luggage for free.

Fare, timings and safety features

The round trip cost of the service is Rs 13,000 plus tax. If a passenger is looking for a one-way ferry ride, they can book the tickets for Rs 6500 plus tax. The daily service from Nagapattinam is at 7 am and it reaches Kankesanturai by 11 am. The return service from Kankesanturai is at 2 pm, and it reaches Nagapattinam by 5 pm. Each passenger is allowed to carry around 50 kg of luggage. According to PTI, the ferry would cover a distance of about 60 nm (110 Km) between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai in about 3.5 hours depending on the sea conditions. The twin hulk catamaran style ferry is also equipped with all safety facilities approved by the government of India.

India will begin ferry service to the neighbouring country Srilanka on the 10th of this month from Nagapattinam. The ferry service will reach Kankesanthurai harbour in Sri Lanka in 30 minutes. To facilitate the service, the Union Government dredged the Nagapattinam harbour at a cost of three crore rupees. The passengers can travel to Sri Lanka for a payment of Rs. 6500/-. The ferry service will be tested on 8th and 9th of this month so that the formal inauguration takes place on the 10th.
