Haj medical screening and fitness certificate:Introduction of new clinical investigations and a short deadline to submit medical fitness certificate triggered panic among prospective Haj pilgrims on Wednesday. A large turnout of over 200 pilgrims seeking the clinical investigations also crippled services at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMC) for some time.Dean Dr Sanjay Bijwe immediately held a meeting with civil surgeon Dr ND Rathod, Haj committee members, and head of departments.
Each year, Saudi Arabia hosts around 25 lakh to 30 lakh pilgrims from across the globe to visit Mecca, and India sends the third-largest contingent of pilgrims. This year, a quota of 1,75,025 pilgrims has been allotted to India, of which 1.4 lakh will go through the Haj Committee.

Haj committee member, said the government uploaded the new format on Monday, with April 7 as the last date. “It was mutually agreed by some pilgrims to bring private lab reports to expedite the fitness certificate process. The junior doctors were not aware,” he said.
Wasim Khan, president, minority cell, Congress, said around 50 applicants had already done their paid investigations outside but doctors refused to accept them. He also said that Haj committee members were not present at the OPD to assist pilgrims.
We can’t certify private lab reports. As per our earlier discussion, I had asked them to come in small batches in morning hours but the OPD was crowded. Yet, I asked to keep one X-ray machine exclusively for pilgrims,” said Dr Bijwe.The dean asked medical superintendent to forward applications to the civil surgeon who is the authority to issue the fitness certificates.

The Health Ministry has issued directions to all states to provide for medical screening and fitness certificates for applicants. With a view to help the applicants, the certificate can be issued by any government allopathic medical doctor in the states, the Minority Affairs Ministry said on Wednesday.
Besides, states and district health authorities will also set up camps for pilgrims for pre-departure medical examination and vaccination, the statement said.
Health desks will be set up at all airports to coordinate the health needs of the pilgrims during departure. The Health Ministry will send a team to Saudi Arabia in April to plan for the requirement of temporary hospitals, dispensaries, pharmacies and camps that may be required in Mecca, Madinah, Jeddah, Arafat, and at the core ritual site of Mina.
